Trending in Embroidery – The Etiquette of the Monogram

One of the hottest trends in embroidery is having both sports apparel and other articles of clothing monogrammed. As most people know, a monogram is a set of initials tied to a certain person of even their family. Historically, the monogram is an ancient way of identifying personal belongings.

Once only for royalty, the monogram was almost the signature of the wealthy that dates back to early Greek and Roman rulers. By the Middle Ages, monograms were a commonplace way to mark or brand their products. This was especially true of artisans. In contrast, monograms of today that while still shouting refinement and hinting at wealth, are a trendy status symbol way to personalize gifts, especially wedding gifts. Currently, they are especially popular with teenage girls on their sporting apparel.

So what’s the etiquette of the monogram? Believe it or not, there are different rules when purchasing a monogrammed item. The most popular rule is to have the monogram done, last name initial first, as the largest letter in the center of the three letter monogram. This last name initial is flanked by two smaller initials on both sides with the first monogram letter being the first name and the last monogram letter being the person’s middle name.

Other traditional monogram rule variations are:

  • Creating a monogram that has all of the letters the same size.
  • Creating a monogram that combines the initials of the bride and groom. With this the first name initial for the groom goes first, the last name initial goes in the middle as the largest, and the first name for the bride is in the third place of the monogram.
